The Great Smoky Mountains are part of the oldest mountain range in North America and are not nearly as high or rugged as their western counterparts. For the most part they are forested to the highest elevations (6000 feet) and do not have the formidable appearance as ranges that extend to elevations above the tree line. This coupled with the warm glow of a sunset and their natural mist and haze create an aspect of soft grandeur not found elsewhere.
