On the leeward side of the mountain the heavy clouds of a cold front settle over the crest allowing frost to form on naked branches and tree tops. Not too many feet below, the the trees on the lower half of the slope are spared this onset of winter, their vibrant colors indicating that autumn has not yielded its enchantment on the forest.
