The ever present mist and haze of the Smoky Mountains creates a unique dichotomy of color and contrast in scenes encompassing larger distances. While the foreground is sharp and vibrant the middle and far distances are less so creating an unusual and interesting dichotomy in the perception of the image. I find that this helps to increase depth and add clarity to the spatial relationships in an image like this one.
