Sunrise view of the Smoky Mountains from the Newfound Gap observation area. Established in 1934, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was designated an International Biosphere Reserve in 1976. The ecological diversity of the park is one of it's most important features. Over 10,000 species of plants and animals have been identified as living within the park's boundaries.
