The Great Smoky Mountains contain over 180,000 acres of old growth forest - the largest in the eastern half of the United States. Old growth forests are typically dense with a thick understory and numerous downed trees and old logs which can make hiking difficult. I was tempted to follow this stream further into the forest to see what interesting scenes might be around the corner, but the light was fading and I did not relish the thought of trying to make my way back to the road in the dimness of the approaching twilight.
