The dense growth of the trees and shrubs of the Appalacian forest act as a filter for the region taking pollutants and carbon dioxide produced by human activity from the air and producing oxygen as part of the process. For deciduous trees this process is interupped by the advent of fall and our temporary loss is countered by the beautiful display as the leaves turn to brilliant colors.
