By the middle of March the Platte River has changed from a place of relative peace and quiet to a busy and noisy place with the arrival of more than half a million migrating waterfowl and sandhill cranes. The birds will spend a few weeks or more resting and gaining fat reserves for their long trip north to their breeding grounds.
